How Many Does the Mazda CX-90 Seat?
The short answer
Seven or eight, depending on the second row. Bench seats eight. Captain's chairs seat seven. The plug-in hybrid seats seven for a completely different reason.

The eighth seat is not locked behind the top of the range, and the PHEV is not simply a gas CX-90 with a battery. Both of those catch people out. Here is the whole picture.

The Two Layouts, Side by Side

One decision drives the seat count: what goes in row two.

8With the second-row bench
  • Three across in row two
  • Three across in row three
  • Two in front
  • The layout to look at for three car seats side by side
  • Available on Select, Preferred, Premium Sport and Turbo S Premium Sport
7With second-row captain's chairs
  • Two individual seats in row two
  • Three across in row three
  • Two in front
  • Walk-through access to the third row
  • Standard on the Premium Plus trims
You do not have to move up the range to get eight seats

This is the thing worth knowing before you shop. Mazda lists the entry 3.3 Turbo Select as offering three-row seating for up to eight passengers, so the eighth seat is available from the bottom of the lineup. Going up the range buys you materials, audio and technology. It does not buy you the extra seat, and on the Premium Plus trims the captain's chairs are standard, which means the top trims actually seat fewer people.

Seating configuration is set per vehicle at build, so two CX-90s on the same lot wearing the same trim badge can seat different numbers of people. Confirm the specific vehicle before you commit to it.

Both layouts wear the same body, which is the difficulty: you cannot tell a seven-seat CX-90 from an eight-seat one from the outside. The window sticker and the second row are the only two places the answer is written.

The CX-90 PHEV seats 7, but not the way the gas car does

This is the single most misunderstood thing about CX-90 seating, and almost nobody spells it out.

The plug-in hybrid reaches seven passengers with a second-row bench plus a two-person third row. The gasoline car reaches seven with second-row captain's chairs plus a three-person third row. Same headline number, different cabin.

It matters if your third row regularly carries three. Three children heading to a game at Seymour Johnson or out to a tournament in Kinston will fit in the back of a gas CX-90 and will not fit in the back of a PHEV. If that is your week, the powertrain decision has just been made for you.

Bench or Captain's Chairs?

Count how often you genuinely need the eighth seat. That is the whole decision, and most people get it wrong by planning for the exception rather than the routine.

Take the bench if

You are regularly carrying a full load. Carpools, three children, a family that travels together most weekends. Three positions across row two is also the configuration to look at if you are fitting three car seats side by side, though whether three specific seats fit depends on the seats, which vary enormously in width. Bring yours and try them.

Take the captain's chairs if

The eighth seat is a few-times-a-year thing. Captain's chairs make row two more comfortable for the two people who are actually in it every day, and the walk-through means nobody has to climb over a folded seat to reach the back. For most Wayne County families running two children and the occasional extra passenger, this is the better daily car.

This is the seven-seat layout: a second-row captain's chair with a walkway beside it, and row three behind. The eight-seat car replaces that chair and the walkway with a bench. It is the only visible difference between a seven-seat CX-90 and an eight-seat one, and it is the whole decision.
Go and sit in both

Ten minutes in the car settles this better than any spec sheet, and it is the one part of the decision you cannot do online. Climb into the third row yourself. Put your car seats in the second row. What About Cargo With All Three Rows Up?

Seat count and cargo space pull against each other, so it is worth knowing the numbers before you plan a trip around them.

Behind the third row there is roughly 14.9 cu ft, which is a grocery run or several soft bags rather than a family's worth of hard luggage. Fold the second and third rows and it opens to about 74.2 cu ft. The Turbo S trims are marginally larger, at about 15.9 and 75.2 cu ft.

The practical version: with eight people aboard and everyone's bags, a roof box or a trailer starts to make sense for a longer trip. With five or six aboard and the third row folded, the CX-90 swallows a great deal.

CX-90 Seating Questions

How many does the Mazda CX-90 seat?
Seven or eight, depending on how the second row is configured. With a second-row bench it seats eight. With second-row captain's chairs it seats seven. The third row holds three people in both cases on the gasoline Inline-6. The plug-in hybrid is a separate case and seats seven for a different reason.
Which CX-90 trims seat 8 passengers?
The eight-passenger second-row bench is available across the 3.3 Turbo Select, Preferred, Premium Sport and Turbo S Premium Sport. Mazda lists the entry Select trim as offering three-row seating for up to eight, so you do not have to move up the range to get the eighth seat. Captain's chairs come standard on the Premium Plus trims, which seat seven.
How many does the CX-90 PHEV seat?
Seven, and this is the part that catches people out. The plug-in hybrid reaches seven with a second-row bench plus a two-person third row, not with captain's chairs. So a seven-seat PHEV and a seven-seat gasoline CX-90 are genuinely different cabins. If your third row regularly carries three, that difference matters.
Should I choose the bench or the captain's chairs?
Count how often you actually need the eighth seat. If it is a few times a year, captain's chairs are the better daily car: easier third-row access, more comfortable for the two people in row two, and a natural walk-through. If you are regularly carrying a full load of children or a carpool, the bench earns its keep every week.
Can three car seats fit across the second row?
With the bench you have three positions across, which is the configuration to look at if you are fitting three seats side by side. Whether three specific seats fit depends entirely on the seats themselves, since they vary enormously in width. Bring yours to us and try them in the car before you buy. That takes ten minutes and settles it properly.
Is the third row usable for adults?
For shorter trips, yes. For a run down US-70 to the coast with adults back there for two hours, it is tighter than the second row and you should try it before deciding. Sit in it yourself rather than trusting a number. Our page on the CX-90 third row covers space and access in more detail.
How much cargo space is there with all three rows up?
Roughly 14.9 cu ft behind the third row, opening to about 74.2 cu ft with the second and third rows folded. The Turbo S trims are marginally larger at about 15.9 and 75.2 cu ft. Behind the third row is enough for a grocery run or several soft bags, not a family's worth of hard luggage.
Can I see both seating layouts in Goldsboro?
That is the right way to decide it. Call us at (919) 823-7198 and tell us you want to compare the bench against the captain's chairs, and we will confirm what is on the lot before you drive over to 3405 McLain Street. Ten minutes sitting in both answers the question better than any spec sheet.
